FEM Ground Movement Assessment – East Anglia

Ground and Project Consultants were commissioned to produce a prediction of ground movement for a riverside development adjacent to a utility tunnel. 

The development involved the installation of dolphin piles close to a utility tunnel and it was therefore necessary to determine the effect of pile installation and subsequent loading of the piles on ground movement surrounding the tunnel structure.

Following detailed interpretation of the ground investigation data to produce a ground model, a Finite Element Model (FEM) analysis was undertaken to predict the behaviour of the ground surrounding the tunnel. Our analysis concluded that ground movements surrounding the tunnel were within acceptable limits for the pile installation and for a worst-case loading scenario.
